A common issue I often encounter with clients is when people have developed a fear of fear itself. Someone might come to me initially for help with a very specific issue such as insomnia, blushing, or exam nerves, for example. But it soon becomes clear that what is making the person feel ten times worse is the anticipation of the worry and not just the trigger situation itself.

When we have a ‘fear of the fear’, also known as anxiety sensitivity or the fear of anxiety, it can create a vicious ‘fear cycle’ or ‘anxiety loop where the anticipation of feeling anxious actually further amplifies the original presenting worry. This can then create a self-fulfilling prophecy, where fearing anxiety makes the anxiety even more likely to occur.

This can be particularly common in people who suffer from panic disorders, sleep disorders, nervous blushing, generalised anxiety disorder or other anxiety-related conditions, but don’t give yourself a hard time because it can happen to any of us at stressful times in our lives. But the good news is you don’t have to stay trapped in this fear loop any longer.
